“For a while the hobbits continued to talk and think of the past journey and of the perils that lay ahead; but such as the virtue of the land of Rivendell that soon all fear and anxiety was lifted from their mind. The future, good or ill, was not forgotten, but ceased to have any power over the present. Health and hope grew strong in them, and they were content with each good day as it came, taking pleasure in every meal, and in every word and song.”
Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien Page 307
Rivendell, rich with music and feasting, songs uplifting the soul. Light as truth and truth as light. Is there such a haven in this world of heavy burdens? Where do we go when this burden is lain on us and for such a time as this, it is ours to bear? Where do we go for reprieve from heaviness? Do we escape to a fictional land of our imagination, a Rivendell of such?
Is it possible to set our place at the table of feasting, holy laughter and rich music, surrounding ourselves with Light and Truth, that which feeds the soul deep, the mind with that which will release fear and anxiety, forgetting and ceasing the power of the chaos? Is it possible to have hope restored?
Rivendell. Intimacy. Joy. Laughter. Possibility. Freedom. A step into the land of the living. Can we choose to bear this burden not knowing how difficult this journey will be?
“It is a heavy burden. So heavy that none could lay it on another.” Elrond of Lord of the Rings, page 304
What is your burden today, this month, this season of life or lifelong struggle?
Not even THIS burden is too great to experience the Land of the Living. It is only a blurb in this great bubble of life that leads us to the Greater End. Keep Hope.
The burden is not yours to bear alone.
“Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you;
He shall never permit the righteous to me moved.” Psalm 55:22
We are to cast off and throw down that load we bear. It was given with His full understanding and allowance. He will bear you up. He will battle for you, nourish you and keep you.
“When I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God (I will praise His word), In God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?” Psalm 56:3-4
The very flesh that covers our soul and spirit, can be the very one attacking. Not even this, can touch my spirit. Not even this can take me down.
“The wilderness and the wasteland shall be glad for them, and the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the rose; It shall blossom abundantly and rejoice, even with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the excellence of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the Lord, the excellency of our God.
Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are fearful hearted, ‘Be strong, do not fear! ‘Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God; He will come and save you.’ Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. The lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the dumb sing. For waters shall burst forth in the wilderness. And streams in the desert. The parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water; in the habitation of jackals where each lay, there shall be grass with reeds and rushes………….
And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing, with everlasting joy on their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.” Isaiah 351-7, 10
Today may be the day of healing. I ask and believe for healing today for you and I. I am ready for the pain to be taken away, the weakness to turn to great strength and the nerve crazies to turn calm. I am ready….
but I am also ready to dwell in “Rivendell”. I am ready to surround myself with Life and Truth and music and feasting and to allow the present joys to crowd out the heavy burden that awaits me or is still heavy upon me. It is that which we focus on that stands biggest in our eyes.
“You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Psalm 16:11
His presence gives the fullest of joy! Release, let go, forgive, let Him heal you from the inside out. And when the ailment or sorrow, or burden still rests upon you, lay it at his feet with me.
Let us rise up as ones, who say,
“O Lord, YOU are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; YOU uphold my lot. The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; Yes, I have a good inheritance.” Psalm 16:5-6
Let us release our plans and purposes to the One who already knows and loves us deeply and passionately. He rejoices over you as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride. He sought you out and calls you to be His own. He greatly rejoices in you. In You!!! Contrary to your burden or the thoughts that ail you, you are a treasure! You are worthy of love because you were created by the Worthy One, valued with His life.
Let us create Rivendell in our homes today; songs of hope and peace. Sing. Dance. See the beauty of Him around you. Let Him draw your mind from this burden to the Burden Bearer. You are loved!
