Hiding in Caves-The Faint in Spirit

Running for his life, hiding in caves from the attacker and the army with him, David felt weary, faint hearted, bent low.

Do you feel it now? Do you remember how it feels to be crushed to the ground by your circumstances, someone’s words or behavior? David had done nothing wrong. He had loved his king well and yet the enemy hated him and the attack was on. David felt alone. If he sat across from a psychiatrist he might have been diagnosed with depression and given a pill to make it fade away.

David, a man after God’s own heart, experienced despair of his life and spirit. He poured out his complaint to God and told Him his troubles.

It’s sad how disillusioned  we are when we think we have no refuge, no one to lean on and no one concerned about our welfare. That is how David felt even though he had a strong group of men with him.  And then we look to the Lord. We look to God’s faithfulness and we choose praise and eventually we are set free from the cave of despair. Eventually, the enemy pulls back and we step out into freedom and walk victoriously. We realize that we were never alone. We were surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses in the heavenlies and the God of heaven in Spirit surrounding us always. And most of us have a great group of strong men or women to surround us. We just need to link arms with them. We are not alone.

David cried out, “I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on your works and consider what your hands have done. I spread out my hands to you; my soul thirsts for you like a parched land.”

“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you.”

“In your unfailing love, silence my enemies.”

My prayer for us today is freedom from the cave of despair. Sometimes we are pushed in against our will and other times we walk in headstrong because we tried fighting on our own. God is able to carry you. God is enough.

Even as David, let us cry out,
“You are  my refuge,

my portion in the land of the living.”

He is enough in the cave and He is enough outside the cave.

You are loved by Love himself.
